While we are able to confirm whether or not our providers are contracted with your insurance provider, the specifics of what services are covered by your insurance plan is not information we have access to.
It is the patient’s responsibility to know what services your insurance will provide coverage for.
Checking for Coverage
While it is convenient to simply go to your insurance provider’s website, we always recommend calling the number on the back of your insurance card to confirm coverage with a representative from your insurance company instead.
Calling is important because websites are not always up-to-date or clear about coverage for naturopathic, acupuncture, or dietitian services. Speaking with someone directly ensures that there’s no confusion about your coverage.
We understand that it’s difficult to know what to ask, once you’ve gotten through to your insurance representative. We’ve compiled a list of useful questions you can ask your insurance provider to better understand your plan’s coverage.
The Questions to Ask Your Insurance Company
Be sure to ask about each of the services that you’d like to take advantage of for all of the questions below. We offer naturopathic, acupuncture, and dietitian services and coverage often varies for each type of service.
General (NDs/FAQ):
- Is (insert provider name) an in-network provider for my plan?
- What is my deductible, co-insurance, and/or copay for ______________ services?
- How many visits does my plan allow for ______________ services? Is this an annual amount or lifetime amount?
Specialty Services: (Acupuncture or Dietitian)
- Does my insurance plan cover dietitian services? (Please note that this is different than receiving diet recommendations from a naturopath.)
- Is there an estimated cost that will be deemed patient responsibility?
- Does my insurance plan cover acupuncture services?
- What is my in-network AND out-of-network cost for acupuncture services?
- Will I need a referral from my provider in order to approve coverage?
Lab Work
We previously published a blog post with details on how to best prepare for completing lab work, including where to find the codes and test information that your insurance rep will ask for in order to confirm coverage.
Here are some additional questions that will help to investigate your insurance coverage prior to completing the lab work:
- With my insurance plan, which lab locations are in-network?
- What is the estimated cost of the labs that will not be covered by my insurance plan?
- These are the CPT Codes and the Diagnosis Codes included in my lab order, what tests will be covered by my insurance plan?
- (Please refer to the how to best prepare for lab work blog post to learn how to find these CPT Codes.)
- When calling your insurance: With my insurance plan, which lab locations are in-network?
- At the time of your lab draw, ask the technician: What is the estimated cost of the labs that will not be covered by my insurance plan?
